Die-Casting Machine Nitrogen Cylinder Leak Repair: How Aged Piston Seals Destroy Your Injection Pressure
In die-casting production, the nitrogen cylinder serves as the core component determining injection power and stability. Recently, we addressed a typical failure: a die-casting machine’s nitrogen cylinder fully drained within days after refilling, making stable injection pressure impossible.
After disassembling the cylinder and extracting the piston, the root cause became evident—all rubber seals had severely aged. The oil seal on one end showed huge cracks, while the air seal on the other end was corroded with pits and lost elasticity. This directly caused continuous nitrogen leakage and prevented the hydraulic system from maintaining effective injection pressure.
During repair, we replaced all piston seals along with the cylinder end cap oil seal. A critical reminder: even if the end cap seal appears intact, leaving it unchanged will eventually cause air-oil cross-contamination and recurring failures.
To quickly diagnose such issues, monitor the nitrogen gauge and hydraulic gauge. Violent pointer swings during compression indicate abnormal nitrogen pressure—too high blocks hydraulic oil entry, while too low fails to provide sufficient backpressure. Normally, the piston rests in the middle, separating the nitrogen chamber and oil chamber. For small-tonnage machines, nitrogen pressure is set to approximately 5 bar, while hydraulic pressure exceeds 10 bar. This pressure differential pushes the piston to store energy. During injection, the solenoid valve opens instantly, releasing stored hydraulic energy as compressed nitrogen drives the piston to deliver instantaneous stable high pressure.
Notably, this piston uses miniature oil seals rather than step seals by original design. Although step seals withstand higher temperatures and last longer, they fail easily if cylinder walls are scratched by iron powder in contaminated oil. Miniature seals offer better sealing performance but have lower heat resistance. Since the piston groove is fixed, we insist on replacing with OEM standard parts to guarantee sealing integrity and durability.
With proper oil temperature control and routine maintenance, these seals typically serve 5 to 8 years. Regular seal replacement is a vital investment to maintain nitrogen cylinder pressure stability and ensure long-term reliable machine operation.
